Recovery
âWell, hello, young lady, glad you could rejoin us. Hmmm, I have been saying that much too often lately. How are you feeling?â a voice came through the haze and pain as she started to wake up.
Barely awake, her mind was swimming in a thick soup; Khaleesi could scarcely make out Doc through her squinted eyes standing over her. âWhat the hell? Where am I?â
Tapping on the control pad on the medical pod, he replied while still reading the results of his query.
âYou are in the medical bay; otherwise, why would I be here? It is not a dream, or is it?â Doc said, tinged with humor in his voice.
Pushing her hands down to lift herself out of the pod, she only got raised several inches before a large shadow shoved her down. Unfortunately, that did not take much effort on the shadowâs part, as she had no strength to fight back. The shadow slowly resolved into the image of Jan.
âAnd just where do you think you are going?â Doc said sternly. âYou are lucky to be alive Major. You will stay in that pod until the nanos have time to repair your legs. Unless you do not want them, that is. If so, you can crawl out of that pod whenever you feel up to it.â
Which she would have tried regardless if only she had the strength. Sinking, she looked up to see a very concerned Jan hovering over her. âOk, Doc, you win. I doubt the big lug standing by you will let me up anyway. Can someone give me an updated status? How are my marines? Army?â
Surprised at the laughter coming from Doc, she was about to ask what was so funny when she figured it out by his comment.
âI told you, asking about her people would be her first words.â a smug-looking Doc said without stopping entering commands into the podâs controls. âI have known her for years, always the same, never changed. Status of her people, before herself, even if near death. Tough as nails with a giant heart.â
âWell, I am out of here; I have a lot of patients to care for. I will see you later, Major, Jan.â with that, Doc made his way to another occupied pod.
Leaning on the edge of the pod, so he was leaning over Khaleesi, Jan looked at her closely before responding. âYou have been out for almost forty-some hours. The captain just left; he would have been able to give you a better update than I can. Then again, he probably did not have time as he wanted to visit as many of the injured here as possible. The captain just left for the bridge. Cap must be exhausted; he has not taken a break since this started. Doc refuses to give him any more stim shots.â
Sighing, Jan swiped her hair towards the back of her head, what little he could reach. âI can tell you the basics, though. Everything went as planned up to a point.
